In the NC Miata, the brackets for the pedals were made slightly weaker than those on the preview generation Miatas (NA/NB). Overtime the clutch pedal tends to see some play and feel sloppy on the foot. With the gussets, it strengthens the areas prone to failure and gets rid of any play.
